Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Disney TN ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Disney TN hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work functions of an ultrasound tech may include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Disney TN ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools set up with Disney TN clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Tennessee or whichever state you choose to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Disney TNAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Disney TN hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Disney home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less expensive than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But similarly as with any sonography program you are reviewing, confirm that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Disney TN ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Disney TN area. Certainly location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed examination of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Disney TN employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram technician programs you are assessing have relationships with Disney TN clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional connections in the Disney healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Tennessee healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Disney TN home. Students who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Disney TN area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.

In 1987, at the age of 12, Marsden booked his first major role in a science fiction movie called Robot Jox, which was released two years after filming because of the studio's financial problems and inevitable bankruptcy at the time. This was followed soon afterwards by the role of Eddie Munster in the TV series remake of The Munsters titled The Munsters Today. At the same time, he also had his first voice acting role in a cartoon, that of Cavin in the later seasons of the Disney TV series Disney's Adventures of the Gummi Bears, as well as being the young announcer of the (new) Mickey Mouse Club and other Disney infomercials.

Marsden continued his career with many guest star appearances on prime time sitcoms. In 1990, he was the voice of Peter Pan in Peter Pan and the Pirates, which ran for two seasons and in 1992, he landed the role of Dash X in Eerie, Indiana.

His next roles included voicing Goofy's son Max Goof in Disney's A Goofy Movie (1995), as well as in the sequel An Extremely Goofy Movie (2000) and also had a role in White Squall (1996). Marsden also did the voice of Garrett Miller on Extreme Ghostbusters and the younger versions of Shere Khan and King Louie on Jungle Cubs, which was a babyfication of Disney's hit film Jungle Book and also reprised Max Goof on Disney's House of Mouse.
