Ultrasound Tech Job Description

Madisonville TN ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Madisonville TN hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work tasks of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Madisonville TN ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another option for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools sponsor through Madisonville TN clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Tennessee or whichever state you choose to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Madisonville TNAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Madisonville TN outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Madisonville home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less costly than traditional options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech school you are looking at, confirm that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Madisonville TN ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Madisonville TN area. Naturally location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Madisonville TN employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the sonogram technician colleges you are reviewing have relationships with Madisonville TN hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Madisonville healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Tennessee healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Madisonville TN residence. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Madisonville TN area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
