They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Westminster MD clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job duties of an ultrasound technician may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Westminster MD ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges organize through Westminster MD clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Maryland or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Classes

student attending online sonography class in Westminster MDAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Westminster MD hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Westminster home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are often less expensive than on-campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But similarly as with every sonography school you are reviewing, check that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Westminster MD ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Westminster MD area. Certainly location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Westminster MD health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the sonogram technician colleges you are reviewing have relationships with Westminster MD clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist graduates and students form professional connections in the Westminster health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Maryland healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Westminster MD residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  school you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Westminster MD area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.

    Westminster, Maryland

Westminster is a city in northern Maryland, United States. A suburb of Baltimore, it is the seat of Carroll County.[5] The city's population was 18,590 at the 2010 census.[6] Westminster is an outlying community within the Baltimore-Towson, MD MSA, which is part of a greater Washington-Baltimore-Northern Virginia, DC-MD-VA-WV CSA.

William Winchester (1706-1790) purchased approximately 167 acres of land called White's Level in 1754[7] which became known as the city of Winchester. The Maryland General Assembly later[8] changed the name of the town to Westminster to avoid confusion with Winchester, the seat of nearby Frederick County, Virginia.[9][10][11]

On June 28, 1863, the cavalry skirmish known as Corbit's Charge was fought in the streets of Westminster, when two companies of Delaware cavalry attacked a much larger Confederate force under General J.E.B. Stuart, during the Gettysburg Campaign.
