Sonogram Tech Occupation Description

Woronoco MA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Woronoco MA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job functions of a sonogram technician may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Woronoco MA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges organize with Woronoco MA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Massachusetts or whatever state you decide to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Woronoco MAAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Woronoco MA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Woronoco home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less expensive than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech program you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Woronoco MA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Woronoco MA area. Clearly location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are a few questions that you need ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? Most sonogram tech colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Woronoco MA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the ultrasound technician programs you are interested in have partnerships with Woronoco MA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Woronoco healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Massachusetts healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will have to be within driving distance of their Woronoco MA residence. Students who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  program you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Woronoco MA area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
