Ultrasound Tech Job Description

Ridgway CO ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Ridgway CO hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work functions of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for further testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Ridgway CO ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools organize through Ridgway CO clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Colorado or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Schools

student attending online sonography class in Ridgway COAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Ridgway CO outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the balance of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Ridgway home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are often more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But similarly as with every sonographer college you are considering, confirm that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Ridgway CO ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Ridgway CO area. Obviously location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other factors that you should also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? Most sonogram tech colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Ridgway CO health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the ultrasound technician colleges you are evaluating have partnerships with Ridgway CO hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist graduates and students form professional connections in the Ridgway healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Colorado healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Ridgway CO home. Those who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  college you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Ridgway CO area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
