Sonographer Job Summary

Dixon Springs TN ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Dixon Springs TN hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job functions of a sonogram tech can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Dixon Springs TN ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges organize with Dixon Springs TN hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Tennessee or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonographer Schools

student attending online sonography class in Dixon Springs TNAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Dixon Springs TN hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Dixon Springs home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But similarly as with every sonography program you are looking at, verify that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Dixon Springs TN ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Dixon Springs TN area. Clearly location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you should also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive review of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Dixon Springs TN health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the sonogram technician schools you are assessing have relationships with Dixon Springs TN hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist graduates and students establish professional connections in the Dixon Springs medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Tennessee healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Dixon Springs TN residence. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Dixon Springs TN area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.

    Dixon Springs, Tennessee

Once a thriving area between Carthage and Hartsville, the community still has many antebellum homes and significant cemeteries of early settlers in the area, including the grave of Col. William Martin, pioneer of the region and eldest son of General Joseph Martin of Virginia.[3] Dixon Springs was settled prior to 1787 by its namesake, Tilman Dixon, Revolutionary War soldier, where his historic home, Dixona, site of the first Smith County court meeting, still stands.

On June 20, 1863, a Civil War skirmish was fought between Confederate soldiers and the Northern occupiers of Dixon Springs at that time. The location of the skirmish was most likely to have taken place approximately a half mile out Rome Road where the northern occupiers commandeered a plantation and dug a trench along a hillside overlooking Rome Road (still visible today) so they could guard the road from any confederates that may have been approaching the Hartsville/Gallatin Pike after crossing the ferry from Rome over to Beasley Bend.
