Sonographer Job Description

Huron TN ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Huron TN hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job tasks of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Huron TN ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous schools set up through Huron TN hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Tennessee or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Huron TNAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Huron TN hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Huron home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are often more affordable than on-campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But similarly as with every sonography school you are considering, make sure that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Huron TN ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Huron TN area. Certainly location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed review of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Huron TN employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are evaluating have partnerships with Huron TN clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Huron health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Tennessee healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Huron TN residence. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Huron TN area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

    Interstate 69

Interstate 69 (I-69) is an Interstate Highway in the United States currently consisting of seven disjointed parts with an original continuous segment from Indianapolis, Indiana, northeast to the Canada–US border in Port Huron, Michigan, at 355.8 miles (572.6 km). The remaining separated parts are variously completed and posted or unposted parts of an extension southwest to the Mexican border in Texas. Of this extension—nicknamed the NAFTA Superhighway because it would help trade with Canada and Mexico spurred by the North American Free Trade Agreement—five pieces near Corpus Christi, Houston, northwestern Mississippi, Memphis, and Evansville have been newly built or upgraded and signposted as I-69. A sixth segment of I-69 through Kentucky utilizing that state's existing parkway system and a section of I-24 was established by federal legislation in 2008, but only a portion is signposted. A section of the previously existing Western Kentucky Parkway from Eddyville to Nortonville was approved and signposted in late 2011, with the Pennyrile Parkway between Nortonville and Henderson being signed as I-69 in 2015,[2] and the Purchase Parkway between Mayfield and Calvert City signed in July 2018.[3] This brings the total length to about 720 miles (1,160 km).

The proposed extension evolved from the combination of Corridors 18 and 20 of the National Highway System as designated in the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991, but the federally recognized corridor also includes connecting and existing infrastructure, including I-94 between Chicago and Port Huron and several spurs from I-69. Among these proposed spurs are an extension of I-530 from Pine Bluff, Arkansas, an upgrade of U.S. Route 59 (US 59) from Texarkana, Texas, and a split in southern Texas to serve three border crossings at Laredo, Pharr, and Brownsville.

In August 2007, I-69 was selected by the United States Department of Transportation as one of six Corridors of the Future, making it eligible for additional federal funding and streamlined planning and review. [4] This funding has since been withheld, causing some states to suspend construction indefinitely.[citation needed]
