Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

Nolensville TN ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Nolensville TN hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job functions of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Nolensville TN ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools sponsor through Nolensville TN hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Tennessee or whichever state you choose to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Classes

student attending online sonography class in Nolensville TNAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Nolensville TN outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your Nolensville home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less expensive than on campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But just as with every sonography program you are considering, check that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Nolensville TN ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Nolensville TN area. Obviously location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed examination of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Nolensville TN health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound technician colleges you are reviewing have partnerships with Nolensville TN hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Nolensville healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Tennessee healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Nolensville TN residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Nolensville TN area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.

    Nolensville, Tennessee

Nolensville is a town in Williamson County, Tennessee. The population was 5,861 at the 2010 census. It was established in 1797 by William Nolen, a veteran of the American Revolutionary War. Located in Middle Tennessee, it is about 22 miles southeast of Nashville, Tennessee. The town was re-incorporated in 1996.

This area was settled by European Americans after the American Revolutionary War, when pioneers began to move west of the Appalachian Mountains. William Nolen, a war veteran,[6] his wife, Sarah, and their five children were passing through the area in 1797 when their wagon wheel broke.[7] Surveying his surroundings, Nolen noted the rich soil and abundance of natural resources. He decided to settle here and the community was later named for him as Nolensville.[8] William Nolen purchased a portion of a land grant made to Jason Thompson, on which Nolensville later developed. Nolen's historic house was moved to a new location in 2009.[9]

In the early 19th century, a large migration from Rockingham, North Carolina, brought the Adams, Allen, Barnes, Cyrus, Fields, Glenn, Irion, Johnson, Peay, Scales, Taylor, Vernon, Wisener, Williams, and other families to the area. Built along Mill Creek, the town was incorporated in 1839.
