Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the West Haverstraw NY area. Clearly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician schools have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many West Haverstraw NY employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram technician programs you are assessing have associations with West Haverstraw NY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional connections in the West Haverstraw medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their West Haverstraw NY residence. Students who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the West Haverstraw NY area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
