Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

Mayfield NY ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Mayfield NY hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job duties of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Mayfield NY ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools set up with Mayfield NY clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in New York or whichever state you elect to work in.

Sonographer Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Mayfield NYAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Mayfield NY outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be attended online in your Mayfield home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are often less expensive than traditional options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But just as with any sonography program you are considering, check that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Mayfield NY ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Mayfield NY area. Obviously location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician schools have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed examination of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Mayfield NY health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the sonogram tech colleges you are evaluating have associations with Mayfield NY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Mayfield health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Mayfield NY residence. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Mayfield NY area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
