Sonographer Work Summary

Moriches NY ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Moriches NY hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work tasks of a sonogram technician can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Moriches NY ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many schools organize through Moriches NY hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in New York or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Moriches NYAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Practical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Moriches NY hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your Moriches home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are often less costly than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But just as with any ultrasound tech college you are looking at, confirm that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Moriches NY ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Moriches NY area. Clearly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are some questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound technician schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Moriches NY employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the ultrasound technician schools you are evaluating have associations with Moriches NY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Moriches healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the sonographer programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Moriches NY home. Those who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  program you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Moriches NY area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
