Ultrasound Technician Work Summary

Morrisonville NY ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Morrisonville NY hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work tasks of an ultrasound tech can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Morrisonville NY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Morrisonville NY clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in New York or whatever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Morrisonville NYAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Morrisonville NY hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the balance of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Morrisonville home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are often more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But similarly as with every sonography school you are looking at, make sure that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Morrisonville NY ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Morrisonville NY area. Certainly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you need ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Morrisonville NY health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound tech colleges you are reviewing have partnerships with Morrisonville NY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Morrisonville healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Morrisonville NY residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  college you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Morrisonville NY area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
