Pine Hill NY ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Pine Hill NY hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job tasks of a sonogram technician may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Pine Hill NY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous schools set up through Pine Hill NY clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in New York or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonographer Schools

student attending online sonography class in Pine Hill NYAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Pine Hill NY hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Pine Hill home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are often less costly than on-campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But just as with any sonography school you are reviewing, confirm that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Pine Hill NY ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Pine Hill NY area. Naturally location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Pine Hill NY health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound technician programs you are assessing have associations with Pine Hill NY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Pine Hill medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with New York healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Pine Hill NY home. Students who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Pine Hill NY area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
