Sonogram Tech Job Summary

Salvisa KY ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Salvisa KY hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job tasks of an ultrasound technician may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Salvisa KY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous schools set up through Salvisa KY hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Kentucky or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Programs

student attending online sonography class in Salvisa KYAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Salvisa KY hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be attended online in your Salvisa home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech program you are looking at, confirm that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Salvisa KY ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Salvisa KY area. Naturally location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you should also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Salvisa KY employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram technician colleges you are interested in have partnerships with Salvisa KY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Salvisa medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Salvisa KY residence. Students who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Salvisa KY area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.

After the capital, US 127 then passes through Owen and Gallatin counties, including the city of Owenton. After its junction with Interstate 71 (I-71), US 127 joins US 42 east of Warsaw. The highway then travels into Boone County, where it has a junction with I-75/I-71 before entering the city of Florence, and then enters Kenton County, and goes through the cities of Erlanger and then Covington before it (during its concurrency with US 25) leaves the state by crossing the Ohio River into downtown Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio.[4]
