Sonographer Occupation Description

Hillview KY ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Hillview KY hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work duties of a sonogram technician can include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Hillview KY ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that almost all sonographer programs do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges organize through Hillview KY hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Kentucky or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Sonographer Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Hillview KYAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Hillview KY outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Hillview home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are often less costly than on campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But similarly as with every sonographer school you are looking at, make sure that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Hillview KY ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Hillview KY area. Obviously location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification also. But there are other factors that you should also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Hillview KY health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the sonogram technician schools you are evaluating have associations with Hillview KY clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist students and graduates develop professional connections in the Hillview health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Hillview KY residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Hillview KY area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
