Ultrasound Technician Work Summary

Letcher KY ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Letcher KY clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job duties of an ultrasound tech may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Letcher KY ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools sponsor through Letcher KY hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Kentucky or whichever state you elect to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Letcher KYAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Letcher KY outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the balance of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Letcher home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are often less costly than on campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech program you are considering, verify that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Letcher KY ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Letcher KY area. Certainly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification also. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Letcher KY employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound technician programs you are evaluating have associations with Letcher KY hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Letcher healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the sonographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Kentucky healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Letcher KY residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Letcher KY area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
