Ultrasound Tech Work Summary

Vaughn WA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Vaughn WA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job tasks of an ultrasound technician can include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Vaughn WA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools set up through Vaughn WA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Washington or whichever state you choose to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Vaughn WAAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Vaughn WA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Vaughn home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times more affordable than on-campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But just as with every ultrasound tech college you are considering, make sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Vaughn WA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Vaughn WA area. Certainly location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Vaughn WA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound technician colleges you are interested in have relationships with Vaughn WA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Vaughn health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Washington healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Vaughn WA residence. Those who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Vaughn WA area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.

    Vaughn Bodē

Vaughn Bodē (/boʊˈdiː/;[3] July 22, 1941 – July 18, 1975) was an American underground cartoonist and illustrator known for his character Cheech Wizard and his artwork depicting voluptuous women. A contemporary of Ralph Bakshi, Bodē has been credited as an influence on Bakshi's animated films Wizards and The Lord of the Rings. Bodē has a huge following among graffiti artists, with his characters remaining a popular subject.[4]

In 1963, at age 21, and while living in Utica, New York,[6] Bodē self-published Das Kämpf, considered one of the first underground comic books.[7] Created after Bodē's stint in the U.S. Army, Das Kampf has been called "a war-themed spoof on Charles Schulz's 1962 book Happiness is a Warm Puppy."[6] With money borrowed from his brother Vincent, Bodē photocopied about 100 copies of the 52-page book and (mostly unsuccessfully) attempted to sell it around the Utica area.[6] In the mid 1960s Bodē was living in Syracuse, New York, attending classes at Syracuse University and contributing to The Sword of Damocles, a student-run, though not university-sanctioned, humor magazine similar to The Harvard Lampoon. It was here that Bodē's most famous comic creation, Cheech Wizard, first saw publication. Cheech Wizard (sometimes characterized as a "cartoon messiah") is a wizard whose large yellow hat (decorated with black and red stars) covers his entire body except his legs and his big red feet. Cheech Wizard is constantly in search of a good party, cold beer, and attractive women. Usually depicted without arms, it is never actually revealed what Cheech Wizard looks like under the hat, or exactly what kind of creature he is, although in the episode entitled "The Unmasking of Cheech Wizard", when he "doffs the hat", it is evident that underneath was a low-rent Oz man all along (in an interview, reference is made to the frontal lump in the hat caused by crossed arms). Characters pressing the issue generally are rewarded with a swift kick to the groin by Cheech. After an initial run in The Sword of Damocles, the strip continued for a few more years in The Daily Orange, the student-written newspaper at Syracuse University.

In 1968, Bodē illustrated the cover & interior art for R. A. Lafferty's science fiction novel Space Chantey, published by Ace Double. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, he illustrated covers and interior art for the science fiction digests Amazing Stories, Fantastic, Galaxy Science Fiction, Witzend and Worlds of If.
