Sonogram Tech Work Summary

Kingston WA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Kingston WA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job duties of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Kingston WA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools set up with Kingston WA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Washington or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Kingston WAAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Kingston WA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Kingston home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are many times less expensive than on-campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But similarly as with every sonographer program you are considering, make sure that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Kingston WA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Kingston WA area. Obviously location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed examination of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Kingston WA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram tech colleges you are interested in have partnerships with Kingston WA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Kingston healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Washington healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Kingston WA home. Students who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Kingston WA area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
