Sonogram Tech Job Description

Keyport WA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Keyport WA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job tasks of a sonogram technician may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Keyport WA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor through Keyport WA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Washington or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Programs

student attending online sonography class in Keyport WAAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Keyport WA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Keyport home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently more affordable than traditional options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But similarly as with any sonography program you are looking at, verify that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Keyport WA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Keyport WA area. Naturally location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous review of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Keyport WA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the sonogram tech schools you are evaluating have associations with Keyport WA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Keyport healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Washington healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Keyport WA residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Keyport WA area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
