Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

Greenacres WA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Greenacres WA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work duties of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Greenacres WA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools organize through Greenacres WA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Washington or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Greenacres WAAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Greenacres WA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Greenacres home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are often more affordable than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But just as with any ultrasound tech program you are reviewing, confirm that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Greenacres WA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Greenacres WA area. Of course location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are additional things that you must also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Greenacres WA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram technician colleges you are assessing have relationships with Greenacres WA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Greenacres health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Washington healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Greenacres WA residence. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  program you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Greenacres WA area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
