Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

Sumas WA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Sumas WA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work tasks of a sonogram technician can include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Sumas WA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Sumas WA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Washington or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Sonographer Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Sumas WAAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Sumas WA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Sumas home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less costly than traditional options. Costs for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But similarly as with any sonography school you are considering, check that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Sumas WA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Sumas WA area. Of course location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed examination of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Sumas WA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram technician programs you are interested in have relationships with Sumas WA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Sumas health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Washington healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Sumas WA home. Those who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  college you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Sumas WA area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
