They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. The majority practice in Friday Harbor WA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job functions of a sonogram tech can consist of:

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Friday Harbor WA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another option for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools set up through Friday Harbor WA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Washington or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Friday Harbor WAAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Friday Harbor WA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be attended online in your Friday Harbor home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But just as with any sonographer college you are considering, confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Friday Harbor WA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Friday Harbor WA area. Obviously location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Friday Harbor WA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram tech colleges you are evaluating have partnerships with Friday Harbor WA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist students and graduates form professional relationships in the Friday Harbor health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Washington healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Friday Harbor WA home. Those who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Friday Harbor WA area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.

    Friday Harbor, Washington

Friday Harbor is a town in San Juan County, Washington, United States. The population was 2,162 at 2010 Census.[2] Located on San Juan Island, Friday Harbor is the major commercial center of the San Juan Islands archipelago and is the county seat of San Juan County.[6]

The town's name originates from Joseph Poalie Friday, a native Hawaiian. Friday worked at the Pugets Sound Agricultural Company's Fort Cowlitz, from 1841 to 1859–60 and later moved north to San Juan Island, raising and herding sheep around the harbor.[8]

Sailing ships, and later, the steamships of the Puget Sound Mosquito Fleet, visited the harbor on a regular basis hauling passengers, mail and freight. Freight from the island would include apples, pears, cherries, strawberries, peas, cream, eggs, chickens, grain, salmon, and lime. All were produced on or around San Juan Island. The Great Depression, World War II, the pea weevil, and competition from Eastern Washington growers brought about the decline of traditional island industries, diminishing Friday Harbor's export trade. The 1970s brought new industries - tourism, retirement, real estate, and construction. Today, Friday Harbor is again busy and prosperous.
