Ultrasound Tech Work Description

Ashford WA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Ashford WA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job duties of an ultrasound tech can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Ashford WA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that most sonographer schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges organize with Ashford WA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Washington or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Classes

student attending online sonography class in Ashford WAAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Ashford WA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Ashford home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times more affordable than on-campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But just as with every sonographer school you are considering, check that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Ashford WA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Ashford WA area. Of course location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed review of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Ashford WA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the sonogram technician programs you are evaluating have partnerships with Ashford WA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Ashford healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Washington healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Ashford WA residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Ashford WA area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
