Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Allyn WA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Allyn WA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work functions of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Allyn WA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that almost all sonographer schools do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor through Allyn WA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Washington or whatever state you choose to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Allyn WAAs previously mentioned, almost all sonogram tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Allyn WA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Allyn home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently more affordable than traditional alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But similarly as with any sonography program you are reviewing, confirm that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Allyn WA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Allyn WA area. Clearly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Allyn WA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the sonogram technician colleges you are interested in have partnerships with Allyn WA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist graduates and students form professional relationships in the Allyn medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Washington healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Allyn WA residence. Students who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  program you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Allyn WA area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
