After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Virginia or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Sonographer Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Triangle VAAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Triangle VA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be attended online in your Triangle home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less expensive than on campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech school you are looking at, make sure that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

Obviously location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Triangle VA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the sonogram technician schools you are reviewing have partnerships with Triangle VA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Triangle medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Virginia healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Triangle VA home. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Triangle VA area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
