You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Keysville VA area. Naturally location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you need ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound tech colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Keysville VA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the sonogram technician colleges you are assessing have partnerships with Keysville VA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Keysville healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Virginia healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will need to be within driving distance of their Keysville VA home. Students who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  college you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Keysville VA area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
