Ultrasound Tech Work Summary

Mechanicsville VA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Mechanicsville VA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work duties of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Mechanicsville VA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor with Mechanicsville VA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Virginia or whichever state you choose to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Mechanicsville VAAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Mechanicsville VA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the balance of the training and classes can be attended online in your Mechanicsville home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently more affordable than traditional options. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But just as with any sonographer program you are considering, confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Mechanicsville VA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Mechanicsville VA area. Certainly location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other things that you must also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Mechanicsville VA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the sonogram tech schools you are evaluating have associations with Mechanicsville VA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Mechanicsville healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Virginia healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Mechanicsville VA home. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Mechanicsville VA area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
