Sonogram Tech Work Summary

Hopewell VA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Hopewell VA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job functions of a sonogram tech can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Hopewell VA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous schools organize through Hopewell VA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Virginia or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Hopewell VAAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Hopewell VA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your Hopewell home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are often less costly than traditional options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech college you are considering, verify that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Hopewell VA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Hopewell VA area. Certainly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed review of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Hopewell VA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are interested in have partnerships with Hopewell VA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Hopewell health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Virginia healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Hopewell VA home. Students who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  college you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Hopewell VA area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

    Hopewell, Virginia

Hopewell is an independent city surrounded by Prince George County and the Appomattox River in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 22,591.[5] The Bureau of Economic Analysis combines the city of Hopewell with Prince George County for statistical purposes.

The city was founded to take advantage of its site overlooking the James and Appomattox Rivers. City Point, the oldest part of Hopewell, was established in 1613 by Sir Thomas Dale. It was first known as "Bermuda City," which was changed to Charles City, lengthened to Charles City Point, and later abbreviated to City Point. (At this time, Bermuda, the Atlantic archipelago, was considered part of the Colony of Virginia and appeared on its maps.) Hopewell/City Point is the oldest continuously inhabited English settlement in the United States, Jamestown no longer being inhabited.

"Charles City Point" was in Charles City Shire when the first eight shires were established in the Colony of Virginia in 1634. Charles City Shire soon became known as Charles City County in 1637. In 1619 Samuel Sharpe and Samuel Jordan from City Point, then named Charles City, were burgesses at the first meeting of the House of Burgesses.
