Glen Allen VA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Glen Allen VA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job duties of an ultrasound technician may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Glen Allen VA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges organize with Glen Allen VA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Virginia or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Glen Allen VA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training can be attended online in your Glen Allen home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are often less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But just as with any sonography college you are looking at, make sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Glen Allen VA area. Certainly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Glen Allen VA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have relationships with Glen Allen VA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist graduates and students develop professional connections in the Glen Allen medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Virginia healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Glen Allen VA home. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  program you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Glen Allen VA area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
