Ultrasound Tech Work Summary

Goode VA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Goode VA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work duties of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Goode VA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges organize through Goode VA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Virginia or whatever state you choose to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Goode VAAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Goode VA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Goode home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are often less costly than on-campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But just as with any sonography school you are looking at, make sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Goode VA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Goode VA area. Obviously location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Goode VA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound technician colleges you are assessing have associations with Goode VA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist graduates and students develop professional connections in the Goode health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Virginia healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Goode VA residence. Those who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Goode VA area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
