Ultrasound Technician Work Summary

Refugio TX ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Refugio TX hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job tasks of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Refugio TX ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges organize with Refugio TX clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Texas or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Classes

student attending online sonography class in Refugio TXAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Refugio TX hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Refugio home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less expensive than traditional alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be lessened as well. But just as with every ultrasound tech school you are looking at, make sure that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Refugio TX ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Refugio TX area. Naturally location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are other factors that you should also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Refugio TX employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the sonogram technician colleges you are evaluating have relationships with Refugio TX clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional connections in the Refugio medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without help. Find out if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Texas healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Refugio TX residence. Students who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Refugio TX area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
