Sonogram Tech Work Summary

Dodd City TX ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Dodd City TX hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job duties of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Dodd City TX ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges set up through Dodd City TX clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Texas or whichever state you choose to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Dodd City TXAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Dodd City TX outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the balance of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Dodd City home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are many times more affordable than on campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech program you are looking at, check that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Dodd City TX ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Dodd City TX area. Clearly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Dodd City TX employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the sonogram technician schools you are reviewing have relationships with Dodd City TX clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Dodd City health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Texas healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Dodd City TX residence. Students who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  college you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Dodd City TX area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
