Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Rives TN ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Rives TN hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Rives TN ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges organize with Rives TN clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Tennessee or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Rives TNAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Rives TN hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Rives home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less costly than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech program you are considering, confirm that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Rives TN ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Rives TN area. Naturally location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you need ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Rives TN employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound tech programs you are evaluating have relationships with Rives TN clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional connections in the Rives health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Tennessee healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Rives TN residence. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Rives TN area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
