Benton TN ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Benton TN clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work duties of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for further testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Benton TN ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another option for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that most sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools set up with Benton TN hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Tennessee or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Benton TNAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Benton TN outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Benton home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less costly than on campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech school you are reviewing, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Benton TN ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Benton TN area. Of course location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you need ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Benton TN employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the ultrasound technician programs you are assessing have relationships with Benton TN hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Benton health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Tennessee healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Benton TN home. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Benton TN area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.

    Benton, Tennessee

Benton was founded in 1840 as a county seat for Polk County, which had been established the previous year. The town, originally a trading post known as McKamy's stock stand, was named in honor of Thomas Hart Benton.[7]

The Benton fireworks disaster was an industrial disaster which occurred on May 27, 1983 on a farm southeast of Benton. An explosion at a secret illegal fireworks operation killed eleven, injured one, caused damage within a radius of several miles, and revealed the operation.[8] The operation was by far the largest and most successful known illegal fireworks operation and the blast, having been heard over 20 miles away, was arguably the largest and most powerful explosion involving firework explosives.

Benton is located at 35°10′27″N 84°39′13″W / 35.17417°N 84.65361°W / 35.17417; -84.65361 (35.1742411, -84.6535468).[1] The town is situated just southeast of the confluence of the Ocoee River and the Hiwassee River, roughly 34 miles (55 km) upstream from the latter's mouth along the Chickamauga Lake impoundment of the Tennessee River. The Unicoi Mountains rise prominently to the east of Benton.
