Sonographer Occupation Description

Powder Springs TN ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Powder Springs TN clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job tasks of an ultrasound technician may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Powder Springs TN ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finish. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many colleges set up with Powder Springs TN hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Tennessee or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Powder Springs TNAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Powder Springs TN hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Powder Springs home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are often less costly than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But similarly as with every sonographer college you are looking at, confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Powder Springs TN ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Powder Springs TN area. Of course location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are additional things that you must also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Powder Springs TN employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the sonogram tech colleges you are assessing have partnerships with Powder Springs TN hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Powder Springs healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the sonographer schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Tennessee healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Powder Springs TN residence. Students who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Powder Springs TN area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

    Harpeth River

The Harpeth River, 115 miles (185 km) long,[2] is one of the major streams of north-central Middle Tennessee, United States, and one of the major tributaries of the Cumberland River. Via the Cumberland and the Ohio Rivers, it is part of the Mississippi River watershed. The lower portion of the Harpeth is designated as a "scenic river" under the Tennessee Scenic Rivers Act.[3]

The Harpeth rises in the westernmost part of Rutherford County, Tennessee, just to the east of the community of College Grove in eastern Williamson County. The upper portion of the river has been contaminated to some extent by the operation of a lead smelting plant located near the Kirkland community that recycled used automobile batteries from the 1950s until the 1990s. [4]

The stream flows generally westerly into Franklin, the county seat of Williamson County. It has operated as a suburb of Nashville since the 1960s. The Harpeth is both the source of the area's drinking water supply[5] and the main site of its sewage disposal.[6]
