Ultrasound Tech Work Description

Lookout Mountain TN ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Lookout Mountain TN clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work duties of an ultrasound tech can include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Lookout Mountain TN ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finish. Another option for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges organize with Lookout Mountain TN hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Tennessee or whichever state you decide to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Lookout Mountain TNAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Lookout Mountain TN outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training can be attended online in your Lookout Mountain home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are many times more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But just as with every sonographer program you are considering, confirm that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Lookout Mountain TN ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Lookout Mountain TN area. Obviously location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other things that you must also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you need ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Lookout Mountain TN employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the ultrasound technician colleges you are evaluating have relationships with Lookout Mountain TN hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Lookout Mountain health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Tennessee healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Lookout Mountain TN home. Students who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Lookout Mountain TN area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
