Andrews SC ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Andrews SC hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work tasks of a sonogram technician may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Andrews SC ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges set up with Andrews SC clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in South Carolina or whichever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Andrews SCAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Andrews SC hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Andrews home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less costly than on-campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech school you are looking at, confirm that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Andrews SC ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Andrews SC area. Of course location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Andrews SC employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the sonogram technician programs you are reviewing have partnerships with Andrews SC clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Andrews healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with South Carolina healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Andrews SC home. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  college you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Andrews SC area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
