Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Mauldin SC ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Mauldin SC hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work duties of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Mauldin SC ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that most sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges organize with Mauldin SC hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in South Carolina or whatever state you elect to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Programs

student attending online sonography class in Mauldin SCAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Mauldin SC outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Mauldin home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are often more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But just as with any sonography college you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Mauldin SC ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Mauldin SC area. Of course location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you should also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Mauldin SC employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the sonogram technician schools you are evaluating have relationships with Mauldin SC hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Mauldin health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with South Carolina healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Mauldin SC home. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  college you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Mauldin SC area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
