Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Woodlyn PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Woodlyn PA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job tasks of a sonogram technician may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Woodlyn PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools set up through Woodlyn PA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Schools

student attending online sonography class in Woodlyn PAAs previously mentioned, almost all sonogram technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Woodlyn PA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Woodlyn home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are often more affordable than on-campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But similarly as with any sonography program you are looking at, verify that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Woodlyn PA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Woodlyn PA area. Of course location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you need ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Woodlyn PA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the ultrasound tech colleges you are evaluating have partnerships with Woodlyn PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Woodlyn health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Woodlyn PA home. Students who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  program you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Woodlyn PA area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
