Roscoe PA sonographer performing ultrasoundSince you have decided to obtain an ultrasound technician degree near Roscoe PA, it’s time to begin the process of choosing a college. First, you have to find the ideal program that will provide the necessary education to become a skilled professional. And given that a number of states do mandate that ultrasound techs be either certified or licensed, depending on where you will practice you may also need preparation to pass a licensing or certification exam. So it’s extremely important that you investigate each program so that you can evaluate and compare your choices. But exactly where does one start? Most students will start by searching for colleges that are within driving distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Certainly cost and location must be taken into account when arriving at a decision, but there are additional important factors also. Such as, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they offer internship programs. These and additional qualifications will be addressed more in detail later in this post. But first, let’s go over what an ultrasound tech does and the credentials and online education programs that are offered.

Ultrasound Tech Occupation Summary

Roscoe PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Roscoe PA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job tasks of an ultrasound technician may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Roscoe PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many schools organize through Roscoe PA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Pennsylvania or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Roscoe PAAs previously mentioned, virtually all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Roscoe PA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Roscoe home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are many times more affordable than traditional alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But just as with any sonography school you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Roscoe PA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Roscoe PA area. Of course location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Roscoe PA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram technician schools you are reviewing have associations with Roscoe PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Roscoe healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Roscoe PA residence. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  program you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Roscoe PA area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
