Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Palestine OH ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Palestine OH hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work functions of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for further testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Palestine OH ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finish. Another alternative for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many colleges set up with Palestine OH hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Ohio or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonographer Programs

student attending online sonography class in Palestine OHAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Palestine OH hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Palestine home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But just as with every ultrasound tech school you are reviewing, verify that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Palestine OH ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Palestine OH area. Clearly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are some questions that you need ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Palestine OH employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the ultrasound tech colleges you are reviewing have associations with Palestine OH hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Palestine health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Ohio healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Palestine OH home. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Palestine OH area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
