Sonographer Work Description

Orrville OH ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Orrville OH clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work tasks of an ultrasound tech can include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Orrville OH ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools organize through Orrville OH hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Ohio or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Orrville OHAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Orrville OH hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be attended online in your Orrville home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are many times more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But just as with every sonography college you are reviewing, confirm that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Orrville OH ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Orrville OH area. Naturally location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other variables that you should also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Orrville OH employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the sonogram tech colleges you are evaluating have associations with Orrville OH hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Orrville healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Ohio healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Orrville OH home. Those who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Orrville OH area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
