Sonographer Job Description

Grand River OH ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Grand River OH clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job duties of a sonogram technician may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Grand River OH ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many colleges organize through Grand River OH hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Ohio or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Grand River OHAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Grand River OH hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Grand River home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are many times more affordable than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But just as with every ultrasound tech school you are looking at, check that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Grand River OH ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Grand River OH area. Naturally location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you need ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Grand River OH health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are evaluating have relationships with Grand River OH clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Grand River health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Ohio healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Grand River OH home. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  college you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Grand River OH area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
