Sonographer Work Summary

Ashland OH ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Ashland OH clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work functions of a sonogram technician may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Ashland OH ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another alternative for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges sponsor through Ashland OH hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Ohio or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Classes

So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Ashland OH hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the balance of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Ashland home. This is especially convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less costly than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But just as with every ultrasound tech school you are looking at, make sure that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Ashland OH ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Ashland OH area. Clearly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you need ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Ashland OH health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram tech schools you are reviewing have partnerships with Ashland OH clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Ashland medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Ohio healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Ashland OH residence. Those who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  school you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Ashland OH area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
