Sonographer Job Summary

Tiltonsville OH ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Tiltonsville OH hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work duties of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Tiltonsville OH ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools set up through Tiltonsville OH hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Ohio or whichever state you elect to work in.

Sonographer Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Tiltonsville OHAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Tiltonsville OH hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Tiltonsville home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech program you are reviewing, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Tiltonsville OH ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Tiltonsville OH area. Certainly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Tiltonsville OH employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram technician schools you are evaluating have partnerships with Tiltonsville OH hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Tiltonsville health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Ohio healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Tiltonsville OH home. Students who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  college you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Tiltonsville OH area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
