Sonogram Tech Job Summary

Stony Point NC ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Stony Point NC hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job duties of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Stony Point NC ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges set up with Stony Point NC hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in North Carolina or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Sonographer Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Stony Point NCAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Stony Point NC hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Stony Point home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are often more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But similarly as with any sonography program you are considering, check that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Stony Point NC ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Stony Point NC area. Naturally location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification also. But there are other factors that you should also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Stony Point NC employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound technician schools you are assessing have relationships with Stony Point NC clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional connections in the Stony Point health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with North Carolina healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Stony Point NC home. Students who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  program you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Stony Point NC area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
