Sonogram Tech Occupation Description

Kelly NC ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Kelly NC clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job duties of an ultrasound tech can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Kelly NC ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that most sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges organize through Kelly NC clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in North Carolina or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Schools

student attending online sonography class in Kelly NCAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Kelly NC outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Kelly home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are often less expensive than on-campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech college you are considering, check that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right option for you.

What to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Kelly NC ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Kelly NC area. Naturally location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Kelly NC employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound technician schools you are evaluating have relationships with Kelly NC clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Kelly healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with North Carolina healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Kelly NC home. Those who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Kelly NC area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
