Sonogram Tech Job Summary

Southern Pines NC ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Southern Pines NC hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job tasks of a sonogram technician may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Southern Pines NC ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools set up with Southern Pines NC clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in North Carolina or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Southern Pines NCAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Southern Pines NC hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Southern Pines home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less costly than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But just as with every ultrasound tech college you are reviewing, confirm that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Southern Pines NC ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Southern Pines NC area. Clearly location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed review of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Southern Pines NC employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the ultrasound technician schools you are evaluating have partnerships with Southern Pines NC hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Southern Pines healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with North Carolina healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Southern Pines NC residence. Students who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Southern Pines NC area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
