Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

Montreat NC ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Montreat NC hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work tasks of a sonogram technician may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Montreat NC ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools organize through Montreat NC hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in North Carolina or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Classes

student attending online sonography class in Montreat NCAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Montreat NC outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Montreat home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But similarly as with every sonography college you are looking at, check that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right option for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Montreat NC ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Montreat NC area. Of course location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed review of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Montreat NC health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the sonogram tech schools you are assessing have relationships with Montreat NC clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Montreat medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with North Carolina healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Montreat NC residence. Students who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  program you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Montreat NC area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
