Julian NC sonographer performing ultrasoundSince you have made a decision to pursue an ultrasound technician degree near Julian NC, it’s time to begin the process of picking a school. To begin with, you need to find the right program that will provide the appropriate instruction to become a qualified professional. And given that a number of states do mandate that ultrasound techs be either licensed or certified, depending on where you will practice you may also need preparation to pass a certification or licensing examination. So it’s very important that you investigate each program in order to assess and compare your alternatives. But just where does one start? Many students will start by searching for schools that are within driving distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Naturally cost and location should be considered when making a decision, but there are additional important factors as well. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools have earned accreditation or if they provide internships. These and additional qualifiers will be covered more in detail later in this post. But first, let’s review what a sonogram tech does and the credentials and online education options that are offered.

Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

Julian NC ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Julian NC clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work duties of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Julian NC ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with Julian NC hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in North Carolina or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Programs

student attending online sonography class in Julian NCAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Julian NC outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Julian home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are many times more affordable than traditional alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But just as with every ultrasound tech school you are considering, check that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Julian NC ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Julian NC area. Certainly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other things that you should also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Julian NC employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound technician programs you are interested in have partnerships with Julian NC hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Julian medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with North Carolina healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Julian NC residence. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  program you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Julian NC area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

    Julian Abele

Julian Francis Abele (April 30, 1881 – April 23, 1950) was a prominent African-American architect, and chief designer in the offices of Horace Trumbauer. He contributed to the design of more than 400 buildings, including the Widener Memorial Library at Harvard University (1912–15), Parkway Central Library (1917–27), and the Philadelphia Museum of Art (1914–28).[4] He was the primary designer of the west campus of Duke University (1924–54).[5] Abele's contributions to the Trumbauer firm were great, but the only building for which he claimed authorship during Trumbauer's lifetime was the Duke University Chapel; after Trumbauer's death, he was more open in claiming credit for his work, which included the original architectural drawings for Cameron Indoor Stadium.[6]

Julian Abele was born in Philadelphia into a prominent family. His maternal grandfather was Robert Jones, who in the late 18th century founded the city's Lombard Street Central Presbyterian Church. He was also related to Absalom Jones, who established the African Episcopal Church of St. Thomas in 1794, the first black church in Philadelphia.[6] His nephew, Julian Abele Cook, worked as the Building Coordinator for Howard University, and Abele's son, Julian Francis Abele, Jr. was an architectural engineer.

In 1925, at the age of 44, he married Marguerite Bulle, a French pianist 20 years his junior. They had three children: Julian Abele, Jr., Marguerite Marie Abele (died young), and Nadia Boulanger Abele. Marguerite left him in 1936, to become the common-law wife of opera singer Jozep Kowalewski, with whom she had three additional children.[6] Because Abele never took action to divorce his wife, the Kowalewski children shared in his estate.[2]
